When Kenny Wharram finally got a real chance to play right wing in the National Hockey League at the age of 25, he made the most of it and before his career ended prematurely in 1969, he had scored over 250 goals, made the first All Star Team twice, won a Stanley Cup and a Lady Byng Trophy. Wharram played for ACT Midgets and the ONR in North Bay before catching on with Galt Junior “A’s” in the OHA. He played a season with Quebec Aces of the QHL and then spent four years as a centre with Buffalo of the AHL where he scored over 130 goals and tallied 328 points in total. In the fall of 1958, he made the Chicago Blackhawk line-up and for the next 11 seasons, his dazzling speed and skills were staples for the Windy City as they won the Cup in 1960-61 and were finalists in 1961-62 and 1964-65. Playing on the famed ‘Scooter’ line with Stan Mikita and Doug Mohns, Wharram finished in the top 10 in points three times; fourth 1966-67, 65 points; sixth,1963-66, 71 points; and tenth 1967-68, 69 points. He won the Lady Byng Gentlemanly Player Award in the 1963-64 season and made the first All Star Team in 1963-64 and 1966-67. Seven times he scored 20 goals or more in a season, when the benchmark was 20, and three times he had 30 or more. He had 39 goals one season and in another picked up 42 assists. He had 30 goals in his last season 1968-69 when he had to retire at 36 for health reasons. For the Hawks, he scored a total of 268 goals and listed 576 points in regular season and playoffs. He played over 1,100 games in his 16 seasons as a pro all told, scoring 407 goals and recording 921 points. For a number of summers Wharram also played outfield in the Gateway Fastball Association.
