Biography:
Jim Sherrit was born in Scotland, arrived in North Bay at the age of three and, although he was primarily known as a hockey player, he also played football, rugger, soccer, softball and took part in track and gymnastics with distinction. After playing minor hockey, he led Chippewa to three straight NDA Nugget Shields while winning two scoring titles. Playing OCAA hockey with Cambrian Maroons (Canadore College), he scored 14 points in one game and won two Northern scoring titles with 107 points in 35 games over two seasons. He turned pro with Cape Cod in the EHL in 1972 and after carding 123 points was invited to the Boston Bruins camp. Instead he joined the Houston Aeros of the WHA and scored 30 goals while playing centre for Gordie and Mark Howe; he added 22 more the next season as the Aeros won two Avro Cups. The senior Howe compared Sherrit to Alex Delveccio. He was traded to Denver in 1975. In 3 1/2 seasons of pro hockey he scored 108 goals; in his 2 1/2 WHA seasons he had 66 goals and 138 pts. He regained his amateur status and played and coached in Orillia. Sherrit was only 5'7" but that didn't stop him from playing football with Chippewa and the NFC Tiger-Cats where he once ran a kickoff back 100 yards; it didn't stop him from playing rugger with the Vandals or soccer at the highest city level.
