Biography:
Born in North Bay, Ron ‘Ike’ Bean started playing softball at age 14. From 1964 to 1970 he played Junior and Mercantile ball and then graduated to the GMFA where he starred for the next two decades. He won 143 regular season games while recording an amazing 56 shutouts and striking out over 1500 batters. He hurled 50 regular season games in which he allowed three or fewer hits, including three no hitters and seven one hitters. He added two more playoff one hitters, in one of which he retired the first 26 batters in a nine inning match. He helped local teams win three All Ontario (OASA) Championships - in two of which he was named the Top Pitcher; he competed in a dozen All Ontarios in four categories; won ten Northland Softball Association titles and seven D.J. Morland Cups. He was chosen a GMFA first team All Star five times, was twice GMFA MVP and three times Top Pitcher as well as being named playoff MVP on three occasions. He shared the North Bay Sport Achievement award with Brian Watters in 1973 and won the Knapp Ball Award in 1985. Although bothered by a chronic bad back he pitched over 1600 innings and completed over 80% of his 231 league starts.
