Biography:

Wayne Lowe came to North Bay at the age of 30. Joining the Granite Club, he qualified for the Brier in 1994 and, in 1998, skipped a North Bay rink that represented Northern Ontario in the Canadian Senior Championships. Lowe had curling experience in Manitoba and Newfoundland. From 1977 he played either lead or second on nine local rinks that reached the Northern Ontario Labatt Tankard final. He was second as the Peter Minogue rink lost in the final to Larry Pineau of Thunder Bay. After seven tries under five skips to qualify for the Brier he decided to go about his quest in a different way. He recruited John McLelland of the Sault and persuaded Phil Lovenmark and Scott Patterson from Pembroke to come here and form a rink. With Patterson skipping and Lowe playing lead, the quartet became the first North Bay rink to reach the Brier since Rudy Steski (1953). At Red Deer Alberta they finished the round robin at 7-4. During that same 1994 season the rink won the Ontario Major League Championship and took part in the World Curling Tour. All told Lowe was involved in three World Curling Tours, competed in three championships, helped win purses of almost $50,000, and achieved a three year ranking of 18th. The rink was rated 5th in the 1994-95 season. In 1997, while skipping a rink in a Powassan bonspiel, he recorded a perfect eight-ender. In his first year as a Senior, Lowe, with his rink of Gerry Cantin, Don Moseley-Williams, Don Harris and Jack Lockhart, won the Northern Ontario title and competed in the Canadians at the Sault.
